How to wash your hair properly according to hairstylists?

There are some techniques hair experts recommend to properly cleanse hair and scalp without creating damage. Using professional tips on products, water temperature, scrubbing, conditioning, and drying can optimize your hair washing for healthier, shinier locks. When wetting hair initially, hairstylists recommend starting with warm but not piping-hot water. Water that is too hot irritates the scalp and causes moisture loss. Warm water helps loosen debris and prep the scalp and hair follicles for cleansing. Finish rinsing with a blast of cool water to seal the cuticle.

Shampoo in sections

Part hair into several sections using clips. Apply the shampoo to one section at a time, focusing on massaging the scalp with your fingertips rather than scrubbing the hair. Rotate where you part sections each wash so the product penetrates all areas of the scalp evenly over time. Thorough scalp massage removes buildup and stimulates circulation. You want to see suds rinsing clear rather than leaving behind bubbly residue. Any leftover shampoo that doesn’t properly rinse away leads to dryness, flakes, and irritation. Take the time when rinsing to let the warm water flow through all sections until zero traces of shampoo bubbles remain.

Apply conditioner to ends first

When using conditioner, apply it first to the mid-lengths and ends of hair. Focus on depositing moisture to the oldest and driest parts. Then, use any remaining product to lightly condition the scalp and roots. Avoid getting heavy conditioner right on the scalp which leads to a greasy look. Use a wide-toothed comb or wet brush to evenly distribute conditioner from roots to ends. Do not just apply conditioner and immediately rinse. Letting it soak in and combing through ensures all strands get coated for optimized moisture and detangling.

Rinse with cool water

After the conditioner has penetrated for a few minutes, rinse it out using cool water. A cool water rinse seals the hair cuticle closed, locking in moisture from the conditioner. It also adds shine by smoothing down the outer cuticle layer. Finish every wash with a cool water blast. When getting out of the shower, avoid rubbing hair vigorously with a towel. This tangle and break delicate wet strands. Instead, gently blot hair to soak up excess dripping water. Wrap hair into a towel or microfiber turban to absorb moisture without rough friction.

Limit blow drying

Allow hair salon fort lauderdale to air dry whenever possible, only blow drying when needing to style. The heat from blow drying can damage hair, especially when done frequently and in high-heat settings. If you must blow dry, always use a heat protectant spray first to minimize damage. Keep dryer on low setting. Detangling wet hair should be done from the bottom up, holding the ends taut. Start brushing at the tips, gently working out knots as you smooth upward to prevent tugging at the sensitive scalp. Use a wide-tooth comb or wet brush specifically designed for pain-free detangling.
